Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
