Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
